Bansk Group Files Lawsuit Against SiteTools Over Domain Name Dispute Oct/18/2023

Bansk Group, a private equity firm specializing in consumer packaged goods, has filed a lawsuit against SiteTools for cybersquatting and brand targeting related to the domain name bansk.com. SiteTools has owned the domain since 2013 and has been monetizing it by forwarding traffic to financial product sites, capitalizing on it being a typo of "banks.com." Bansk Group, which was formed in 2019, had approached SiteTools last year to buy the domain for $10,000, an offer that was declined. Following a pre-emptive lawsuit filed by SiteTools, which was dismissed, Bansk Group is now filing its own suit in a U.S. District Court in New York. Bansk Group alleges that SiteTools is intentionally diverting consumers and damaging the Bansk brand. It also argues that SiteTools effectively "registered" the domain anew when it renewed it, despite the domain having existed years before Bansk Group was formed. Chart below shows the relative share of active gTLD domains.
