WIPO Rules in Favor of MAA in Domain Dispute Over Impersonation and Trademark Misuse

The WIPO panel has ordered the transfer of the domain name <maa-us.org> to The Mathematical Association of America (MAA), following findings of bad faith registration and trademark infringement. The dispute arose after Singapore-based entity registered the domain and launched a website mimicking the official MAA site, complete with the MAA logo and content. The Complainant, which has operated under the MAA trademark (U.S. Reg. No. 5234897) since 1975, successfully argued that the domain was confusingly similar to its trademark, that the Respondent lacked legitimate rights, and that the site was created to mislead users for commercial gain. The panel concluded that the domain was registered and used in bad faith, constituting a violation of the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy. The following visualization shows detailed information on the original MAA trademark, providing essential context for the panel’s ruling.
