Instagram Wins Domain Dispute over 'Story-Insta.com'

In a recent decision by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Instagram LLC succeeded in its domain dispute against FlokiNET Ltd. regarding the domain 'story-insta.com.' Instagram argued that the domain was confusingly similar to its registered 'INSTA' trademark, which has achieved global recognition since the platform’s launch in 2010. Instagram contended that the unauthorized use of its trademark implied an affiliation and constituted a bad faith attempt to profit from the Instagram brand. Despite receiving a formal complaint, FlokiNET Ltd. did not respond, which the WIPO panel viewed as further evidence of bad faith. The ruling ordered the transfer of “story-insta.com” to Instagram, reinforcing protections for well-established trademarks in cases of digital impersonation.
