Meta Tightens Control Over Abusive Domains

Meta Tightens Control Over Abusive Domains Apr/06/2026

Meta Platforms has secured victories in domain-name disputes, underscoring the growing assertiveness of tech giants in policing misuse of their brands online. In two WIPO rulings, panels ordered the transfer of domains exploiting 'FB' and 'FACEBOOK' marks — ranging from <fbviewer.org> to video-downloading sites — after finding clear evidence of opportunistic bad faith, including impersonation and misleading branding. The cases highlight a familiar pattern: operators leveraging Meta’s vast global footprint — spanning billions of users — to attract traffic and monetize unauthorized tools, often cloaked in superficial disclaimers or privacy shields. Arbitrators dismissed such tactics as insufficient, reinforcing that even ostensibly descriptive domain additions cannot legitimize conduct that trades on brand recognition.
