Nike and SKIMS File Trademarks as Joint Venture Takes Shape

In mid-September, Nike applied for a figurative trademark spanning footwear and a wide range of apparel, while SKIMS Body submitted a similar filing covering cosmetics, lingerie, shapewear, and accessories. The near-simultaneous moves reflect how both companies are fortifying their intellectual property portfolios just as they roll out NikeSKIMS, a new activewear brand billed as more than a collaboration. For Nike, the venture represents a chance to reinvigorate its women’s business after patchy performance, while for SKIMS it is a fast track from shapewear disruptor to global sportswear contender. With Nike contributing manufacturing scale and technical know-how, and SKIMS lending cultural resonance and fit expertise, the project is designed to leapfrog incremental brand extensions, aiming instead to engineer a billion-dollar label from the outset.
