Chinese Businesses' Trademark Influence in North America: A 2023 Analysis

Throughout 2023, the landscape of trademark publications in the United States and Canada saw a notable influence from Chinese businesses, highlighting the impact of international entities on North American markets. This article breaks down the monthly proportions of trademark publications in both countries, divided among US, Canadian, Chinese companies, and the rest of the world.
Starting with the United States, domestic companies dominated the trademark publications, accounting for 61% to 68% each month, with February 2023 witnessing the highest rate. A closer look reveals Chinese businesses accounting for a significant share of the publications, varying from 17% to 24%, the highest rate recorded in June 2023 (24.13%). Canadian companies, on the other hand, had a smaller footprint in the US market, with their proportion ranging between 1.5% to 1.7%, the highest rate again noted in February 2023. Turning to Canada, the distribution of trademark publications was more balanced between businesses from different countries. Canadian companies accounted for 31% to 36% of all publications, with the highest rate in March 2023. US companies had a share between 25% to 29% of trademark publications, peaking in June 2023 (29.19%). Interestingly, Chinese companies marked their presence with shares varying between 14% and 20%, reaching the highest in January 2023 (20.6%).
Drawing conclusions from these observations, it's clear that the impact of foreign businesses is more pronounced in Canada than in the US. Moreover, the data underscores that Chinese businesses consistently made up around a fifth to a quarter of all trademark publications in the US each month of 2023. This trend signifies the growing global influence of Chinese enterprises and their strategic expansion into North American markets.
