Converse Extends Trademark Reach Beyond Footwear Into Tire Market
May/20/2026
Converse, the footwear brand owned by Nike subsidiary All Star C.V., secured a legal victory in the United Kingdom after successfully opposing Simple Tire LLC’s attempt to register the 'CONVERSE' trademark for vehicle tires and tire retail services. The ruling, issued in April 2026, concluded that although tires and sneakers are commercially distant products, consumers could still perceive an economic link between the two sectors because of Converse’s historical roots in rubber manufacturing and the broader overlap between tire technology and footwear sole innovation. The tribunal highlighted evidence showing how companies such as Michelin have leveraged tire-engineering expertise in shoe sole development, while automotive and mobility brands increasingly collaborate with fashion and apparel labels. Converse’s long-standing reputation in casual trainers, reinforced by decades of extensive sales, advertising, and cultural visibility in the UK, proved decisive. While the court found no direct likelihood of confusion between footwear and tires, it ruled that the identical 'CONVERSE' mark would unfairly benefit from the brand’s reputation and consumer familiarity, ultimately blocking the application in full.
