Sony Challenges 'Sonivex' Trademark as It Expands Its Technological Empire

Sony Group Corporation has filed a U.S. trademark opposition against Beijing Xingqiao International Transport Agency’s application for 'SONIVEX', a mark covering agricultural and household machinery such as harvesters, washing machines, and electric juicers. The Japanese electronics titan argues the name too closely mirrors its globally recognised "Sony" brand, risking consumer confusion across multiple product categories. The dispute surfaces as Sony continues to diversify its portfolio far beyond entertainment and gaming. With annual revenues nearing $87 billion and strong performance in its PlayStation and semiconductor divisions, Sony has also been pushing into electric vehicles through its Sony Mobility arm. Its expanding reach underscores the brand’s enduring influence across industries—from music and motion pictures to imaging and mobility. Investors appear confident: Sony’s shares climbed nearly 7% as part of a broader rally in Japan’s Nikkei index, buoyed by renewed optimism in heavy industry and tech.
