Caterpillar Opposes 'Sealcat' Trademark While Navigating Market Pressures

On September 11, Caterpillar Inc., the Illinois-based industrial giant and world leader in construction and mining equipment, filed a U.S. opposition against the “Sealcat” trademark, covering electronics from microphones to smartphone accessories. The move underscores Caterpillar’s vigilance in defending its brand, even outside its core machinery markets, as it faces intense competition from Komatsu, John Deere, Hitachi, and Liebherr. Founded in 1925 through a merger in California, Caterpillar reported $64.8 billion in 2024 sales—down from the previous year—with about $35 billion generated in North America. Despite its commanding position and global workforce of over 113,000, revenue pressures and rival advances highlight the challenges facing a company that remains both a manufacturing powerhouse and a custodian of one of America’s most recognizable industrial brands.
